Grilled Peppered Kangaroo at the Queen Victoria Market
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
MelbourneThe Queen Victoria Market covers seven hectares, which is enough to be intimidating if you do not know where to start. Two hours with somebody who does solves that.
The tastings depend on what is good that morning, which is the correct way to run a market tour, but usually include fresh seafood, grilled peppered kangaroo, a selection of local cheese, fresh dips and seasonal gelati.
The kangaroo is the one to come for. It is lean, dark and closer to venison than to beef, and outside Australia it is nearly impossible to get.
Beyond the eating, the tour is practical: how to shop here, what the unusual ingredients are and what to do with them, the market's history, and introductions to the traders themselves, who have in many cases been on the same stall for decades.
You go home with a market tote bag.
Two hours, ten people per guide, in English.
Two things to know. This tour cannot accommodate individual dietary requirements: it is a tasting tour and the tastings are what they are. And in line with the market's sustainability policy there is no bottled water, so bring your own and use the refill stations around the site.
Wheelchair accessible throughout, service animals allowed, prams fine. Comfortable shoes.

Queen Victoria Market tastings
The group meets at a prearranged spot in Queen Victoria Market, a historic market established in 1878 across two city blocks and nicknamed Vic Market or Queen Vic. Vendors set up in the laneways five days a week, and the guide points out details that are easy to miss. The market has produce stalls, honey, spices and a hall of pates, cheeses and dips (Deli Hall, also called the Dairy Produce Hall), plus specialty shops: gourmet bread, nuts and dried fruit, handmade pasta, and the American Doughnut Kitchen, known for its hot jam doughnuts. Sample tasting menu, subject to change: Coffin Bay oysters, hot jam doughnuts, grilled peppered kangaroo, pickled octopus, local goat's milk cheese, fresh dolmades and Victorian olives. Tastings are seasonal and depend on what the market has that day.
