Margarita's Garden in San Angel, Four People Only
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Mexico CityFour people at most, and the whole thing is private, which at that size means it stops resembling a class at all.
Margarita hosts it in her own house in San Angel, a residential neighbourhood a long way from anywhere with a tour bus, and the meal is eaten in her garden.
The market comes first: the Mercado Melchor Muzquiz, which is where she shops, and the introduction to the ingredients Mexican cooking is built on.
Then her kitchen, and two or three traditional dishes from her family's recipes, made together rather than watched.
Four hours, in English or Spanish, with the market tour, the class, lunch or dinner, alcohol, coffee or tea.
Gratuities are included, which is unusual and worth noting.
Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.
Transport is not included. The contact details and a Maps link come in the 'Before you go' section of your voucher.

Market visit and home cooking class with Margarita
The group meets Margarita at the main entrance of Mercado Melchor Múzquiz, also called Mercado San Ángel, a neighbourhood market where locals do their grocery shopping. Margarita introduces some of the local fruits and vegetables, and the group buys some of the ingredients for the class. After the market the group goes to Margarita's home on a residential street in Tlacopac San Ángel. A welcome drink and appetizers open the class, in which guests learn to make 2 or 3 traditional Mexican dishes: tortillas from scratch, a soup such as creamy chorizo-bean soup or tortilla soup, and a main dish such as chiles rellenos or pork tenderloin in tamarind sauce. The meal is eaten at Margarita's dining table or, in warm summer months, outdoors in her garden. It ends with rice pudding or a spicy chocolate mousse, and coffee or tea.
